Agricole Rum Flight in Edgewater: Hosting a Group Tasting

Published · By Kaona Room

If you're after an agricole rum flight in Edgewater, the short answer is the Agricole Experience at Kaona Room: three pours of rhum agricole from Martinique and Guadeloupe for $32, served with tasting notes and the stories behind each bottle. Most of what we've written about it so far assumes one or two people at the bar. This one is for the group chat. Maybe it's four friends who've heard about the grassy rum and want to try it together, or maybe it's twelve coworkers and a birthday, and either way the plan changes depending on how many of you are coming.

The agricole rum flight in Edgewater, in plain terms

So what is rhum agricole? It's rum distilled from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses, which is the byproduct of sugar refining that almost every other rum starts from. That one difference shows up loudly in the glass. Our rum collection page calls the style grassy, floral and terroir-driven, and the islands that make it carry an AOC designation, a protected-origin rule along the lines of what French wine regions use.

Rhum agricole vs molasses rum comes down to this: molasses rums tend to read rounder and sweeter, while agricole tastes closer to the cane itself, green and a little peppery with a drier finish. That contrast is exactly why it works so well for a group. Put three pours on the table and five opinions show up within a minute, and somebody always turns out to love the one the rest of the table found strange.

The flight sits on the menu next to two others. The Caribbean Journey ($28) runs three expressions from Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad, and Aged & Rare ($45) covers premium 12, 15 and 21 year selections. Every rum in the collection of more than 50 expressions is also poured neat or on the rocks.

Six or fewer: book a table and pass the glasses

For a party of up to 6, you book like anyone else. Reservations run through SevenRooms with instant confirmation, and that's the way in, since walk-ins are only welcome when space permits and entry is never guaranteed. Friday and Saturday regularly sell out a week or more ahead, so if your crew can do a Wednesday or Thursday, the room tends to feel slower and better suited to talking through a tasting. One small thing worth knowing: parties of 6 or more are asked to cancel at least 24 hours ahead rather than the usual 2.

Here's how we'd run it at a table of four to six. Order the Agricole Experience for every two people, so each pair shares three pours, and add a Caribbean Journey somewhere on the table so the molasses side has a voice. Smell each glass first, because the aromatics are where agricole shows off, and keep the sips small. Then trade. Hearing someone else describe a pour you just tasted is half the fun, and it's the closest a casual night out gets to a real guided tasting.

Not everybody in a group wants to taste rum neat, and that's fine. The Pina Colada ($15) and the Painkiller ($16) keep the less adventurous happy, and the Volcano Prayer ($18), with aged rum, falernum, passion fruit, lime and an absinthe mist, is a nice bridge for anyone who liked the herbal side of the agricole. Order a few small plates for the middle of the table too. The Tropical Ceviche ($16) and the Poke Bowl ($18) suit a grassy, bright spirit, and the Coconut Shrimp ($16) with mango chutney disappears fast no matter what anyone is drinking.

Seven or more: a small private party venue in Edgewater built around rum

Once the headcount hits 7, online booking stops and our private events team takes over. That's where a rum night can turn into something more deliberate. The private events offer includes curated rum tastings, meaning guided flights and educational tasting experiences led by our bartenders for your group, and the rum collection page mentions custom flight selections and food pairings for groups who want a deeper dive. An agricole-led tasting is a natural fit if your group is curious about cane juice rum.

The room seats 45, which is the whole point. It's small enough that a group of twenty fills it with its own energy, and the options scale from there: full or partial buyouts, custom cocktail menus built with our mixologists, food and beverage packages, a private bartender and service team, and control over music playlists, lighting and decor. People book it for birthdays, engagement parties, rehearsal dinners, corporate happy hours, bachelor and bachelorette parties, holiday celebrations and small networking events.

Minimum spend varies by day and group size, so the only honest way to get a number is to ask for a quote through the private events page, where you'll also find the events brochure. Earlier booking is recommended for weekend dates.

A few things to sort before the night

Kaona Room is 21+ with valid government-issued ID, and the dress code is smart casual with tropical elegance, so Hawaiian shirts are encouraged and flip flops and athletic wear are not. We're at 1600 NE 1st Ave, hidden inside The Leinster Irish Pub, and we're open Wednesday and Thursday 6PM to 1AM, Friday and Saturday 6PM to 2AM, closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. There's free street parking on NE 1st Ave and the side streets, and Wynwood is about five minutes away if your group is coming from dinner over there.

As for the entrance, we'll leave that to you. In a group, somebody always finds it first, and they never let anyone forget it.
