If you're trying to plan a group rum tasting in Miami, the easiest version is also the most fun one: get your people around a table at Kaona Room, order a few of our three rum flights, and taste your way from light and bright to old and deep. Each flight is three pours served with tasting notes and stories from the bartenders, so nobody needs to be a rum expert to enjoy it. Bigger crews can go further and turn the whole room into a private tasting. Here's how we'd plan either one.
Why a bar works for a group rum tasting in Miami
A lot of rum tastings around town are built as tours. You show up at a set time, taste a few samples, and the experience wraps up on someone else's schedule. That's great for some trips. A group tasting at a bar works differently, because the tasting is the start of the night instead of the whole night. When the last pour is gone, you're still sitting in a 45-seat tiki speakeasy with amber light, bamboo and a full cocktail menu, and nobody has to figure out where to go next.
It also takes the pressure off the planner. You don't need to buy bottles, borrow glassware or remember which rum came from where. The collection runs past 50 expressions from Jamaica, Barbados, Martinique and Guadeloupe, Guyana, Trinidad and the navy strength and overproof world, and the bartenders do the explaining. Your only job is getting everyone to show up dressed for it (more on that below).
Building the flight order for a rum tasting party
The three flights on the menu line up almost like a tasting course if you order them in the right sequence. This is the plan we'd suggest for a rum tasting party of four to six.
Start with the Caribbean Journey ($28)
Three expressions from Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad. It's a smart opener because it shows how much range rum has before anyone gets too deep. Jamaica tends to be bold and funky with loud tropical fruit, Barbados is the balanced and approachable one, and Trinidad leans light and crisp. Most groups find their first favorite right here, and the arguments start immediately.
Then the Agricole Experience ($32)
Rhum agricole from Martinique and Guadeloupe, made from fresh sugarcane juice instead of molasses. After the Caribbean Journey it tastes completely different, grassy and floral, and that contrast is the whole point of putting it second. It's the flight that wakes the table up.
Finish with Aged & Rare ($45)
Premium 12, 15 and 21 year selections. Save it for last, when palates are warmed up and the conversation has slowed down enough to actually sit with each glass. If the budget only stretches to one premium flight, share it around the table so everybody gets a sip of the 21.
A good rule for groups is one flight for every two people per round, so pairs share three pours and compare notes. Smell before you sip, keep the sips small, and trade glasses. Hearing a friend describe the same rum in completely different words is half of what makes a group tasting better than tasting alone.
Breaks, bites and the friends who don't drink rum neat
Every group has someone who'd rather have a cocktail than a neat pour, and a tasting night shouldn't leave them out. Between flights is a natural moment for a round of drinks. The Pina Colada ($15) and the Hurricane ($15) are easy crowd-pleasers, the Mai Tai ($17) with aged Jamaican rum connects nicely to the opening flight, and the Zombie ($18) is there for anyone who wants to see what three rums in one glass feels like. The Kaona ($20) is our signature, and you'll have to ask your bartender for the story behind it.
Put a few small plates in the middle of the table too. The Coconut Shrimp ($16) with mango chutney goes fast, the Tropical Ceviche ($16) is bright enough to reset your palate between flights, and the Poke Bowl ($18) gives everyone something a bit more substantial before the aged rums show up.
Booking it: small group or the whole room
For up to 6 people, you book a table through reservations on SevenRooms and get an instant confirmation. Reserving is the way in, since walk-ins are welcome only when space permits. Friday and Saturday evenings regularly sell out a week or more in advance, so a Wednesday or Thursday is worth considering if your group is flexible, and the slower pace suits a tasting. For a table of 6, plan to cancel at least 24 hours ahead if plans change.
For 7 or more, head to private events. That's where a tasting can become a proper event, with curated rum tastings led by our bartenders, custom cocktail menus, food and beverage packages, a dedicated bartender and service team, and control over the music and lighting. With a capacity of 45 guests, it's a fit for birthdays, bachelorette parties, corporate happy hours and holiday celebrations. Minimum spend varies by day and group size, so request a quote there and grab the events brochure while you're at it.
A couple of things to share in the group chat before the night. Kaona Room is 21+ with valid government-issued ID at the door, and the dress code is smart casual with a tropical elegance twist, so Hawaiian shirts are encouraged while flip flops and athletic wear are not. That themed dress code is a big part of why groups have fun here, and the photos come out better too. We're at 1600 NE 1st Ave, hidden inside The Leinster Irish Pub, open Wednesday and Thursday 6PM to 1AM and Friday and Saturday 6PM to 2AM. As for the door, finding it is the first chapter, and your group can figure that part out together.
Ready to taste your way across the Caribbean with your crew? Reserve a table for up to 6 on SevenRooms, call 786-807-8587, or start a private events inquiry for bigger groups, and we'll see you at Kaona Room.
