Wynwood. Better known for murals and breweries, but there are bars in Wynwood worth seeking out if you like a more theatrical, high-energy tiki or cocktail room. It runs louder and later than Edgewater, so it pairs well as the second stop of a night rather than a quiet nightcap.

South Beach and Brickell. The classics live over here. South Beach hides a few old-world cocktail rooms inside hotel lobbies, and Brickell has its share of dressed-up speakeasy concepts. These are easier to find than a true unmarked door, but the atmosphere can still deliver the mood you came for.

How to Actually Find the Door

Once you have the right block, the last stretch is the part people overlook. The best secret bars are concealed inside another business, so the trick is knowing what you are walking into. Kaona Room, for instance, lives inside The Leinster Irish Pub in Edgewater. You would never guess a tropical tiki room is back there, which is exactly why it works. A little homework goes a long way, so it helps to check the venue's own directions page before you go. A few habits make the hunt smoother. Go earlier in the week if you want the quiet version of a place, since Friday and Saturday fill up. Keep the group small, because most of these rooms are built for intimacy rather than crowds (ours seats only 45). And when a spot takes reservations, use them. The whole appeal of a secret bar falls apart if you are stuck waiting at a door you already had trouble finding.
